Dalhousie University is a non-denominational co-educational University, founded in 1818 by George Ramsay, the ninth Earl of Dalhousie and then Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.  The Earl modeled his namesake college after the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.  The cornerstone for Dalhousie University's first building was laid in 1820 on what is now known as the Grand Parade where Halifax's City Hall now stands.

Dalhousie is a dynamic, research-intensive university. Our students, faculty and staff enjoy all the opportunities of a large university within the unique and vibrant coastal community of Halifax.
